The trip, in short
Kilimanjaro's quiet northern approach, climbing dry, uncrowded terrain from near the Kenyan border to Uhuru Peak.
Rongai is the odd one out among Kilimanjaro’s routes — the only path that climbs from the north, starting near the Kenyan border and crossing terrain drier and quieter than the busier southern approaches. That dry-side climate makes it a solid choice in the shoulder seasons when other routes turn muddy, and the lower foot traffic means camps stay uncrowded even in peak months.
The path climbs through pine forest and open moorland to Mawenzi Tarn, camping in view of Mawenzi Peak’s jagged rock towers, before crossing the lunar-like saddle to Kibo Hut for the final approach. Summit night begins around midnight, reaching Uhuru Peak (5,895m) for sunrise, with the descent dropping south through Horombo Hut to the Marangu Gate — meaning climbers go up one side of the mountain and come down an entirely different one.
What makes this one special
- Only route approaching Kilimanjaro from the north
- Drier climate and far fewer climbers on the trail
- Camp in view of Mawenzi Peak's jagged towers
- Summit Uhuru Peak (5,895m) at sunrise
- Descend a completely different route to the ascent
