Overview

The trip, in short

A six-day Mt Kenya expedition with a dedicated acclimatization day at Hausberg Tarn, ascending via Sirimon and descending via Chogoria.

This six-day route climbs Mt Kenya via Sirimon, on the mountain’s drier northwestern flank, with camps at Old Moses and Shipton’s Camp and a full acclimatization day built in around Hausberg Tarn — a high-altitude detour that helps the body adjust before the final push and gives climbers a genuine rest day rather than just another walking day disguised as one.

From Shipton’s Camp, an early start puts climbers on Point Lenana’s summit for sunrise over the Eastern Glaciers, after which the route descends via Chogoria — down through Minto’s Hut, past Lake Ellis, and into the forest zone for the final stretch to the gate. The six-day structure gives this climb one of the better acclimatization profiles among Mt Kenya’s standard itineraries, worth the extra two days for climbers who feel altitude more than most.
