The trip, in short
Kilimanjaro's quietest and most scenic approach, crossing the remote Shira Plateau before joining the Southern Circuit to the summit.
Lemosho starts further from the crowds than any other Kilimanjaro route, entering through remote forest on the mountain’s western side before climbing onto the vast, open Shira Plateau — a landscape that feels more like high-altitude savannah than mountainside. Because it approaches from the west, Lemosho stays quieter for longer than Machame or Marangu, and its extra distance builds in some of the best acclimatization of any standard itinerary.
The route joins the Southern Circuit near Barranco Camp, tackling the same iconic Barranco Wall scramble before continuing to Karanga and Barafu for the summit push. A midnight departure from Barafu leads to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) at sunrise, followed by a long descent through Mweka Camp to the gate. For climbers who want Kilimanjaro’s full scenic range — forest, plateau, alpine desert, summit — without the crowds of the shorter routes, Lemosho is usually the first recommendation.
