What it’s actually like
Follow the movement of roughly two million wildebeest, zebra, and gazelle across the Masai Mara–Serengeti ecosystem, timed around the dramatic river crossings and the predators that wait for them. VPAAL positions each itinerary near the herds' current location rather than a fixed route, with early-morning and late-afternoon game drives led by guides tracking daily movement reports.
Every year, roughly two million wildebeest, zebra, and gazelle move in a rough circuit between Tanzania’s Serengeti and Kenya’s Masai Mara, chasing rain and fresh grass. The dramatic part — dense columns of animals plunging into the Mara and Talek rivers while crocodiles and big cats wait — is what most travellers picture when they hear “the Great Migration,” but the herds are visible in some form across the wider ecosystem for most of the year, not just during the river crossings.
VPAAL builds migration itineraries around where the herds actually are that week rather than a fixed script, working with camps and guides positioned close to known crossing points and updated daily on herd movement. Game drives run at dawn and again in late afternoon, when both the light and the animal activity are at their best, with time built in at midday to rest at camp or take an optional bush walk.
A migration safari pairs naturally with a few extra nights in a private conservancy for quieter game viewing, or a short extension to the coast afterwards. Because the herds move between two countries, we plan Kenya-only, Tanzania-only, or combined itineraries depending on the season and where the action is concentrated.
