Lake Naivasha

A freshwater Rift Valley lake near Nairobi, known for hippo-filled boat rides, prolific birdlife, and walking safaris on Crescent Island.

Lake Naivasha breaks the pattern of most Rift Valley lakes by being freshwater rather than soda, which is why it supports fish, papyrus swamp and a wide fringe of acacia woodland rather than the algae-driven flamingo spectacles of its alkaline neighbours. The name comes from the Maasai “Enaiposha,” meaning rough or heaving water — a nod to the sudden afternoon squalls that can whip up waves on what is otherwise a calm, mirror-still lake most of the day.

The lake is best experienced from the water. Boat rides bring visitors close to resident hippo pods and give good access to the birdlife — more than 400 species have been recorded here, from fish eagles to giant kingfishers — while Crescent Island, a walking sanctuary on the lake’s edge, allows rare on-foot encounters with giraffe, zebra and waterbuck in a predator-free setting.

Just over an hour from Nairobi, Naivasha works well as a first or last stop on a longer circuit, or as a relaxed weekend escape in its own right — a mix of boating, birdwatching, and short hikes up Mount Longonot or through the Ol Karia geothermal area for travellers who want scenery and mild activity without a long game drive.
